Familiarizing Degrowth: Art and Grounded Communities
New article in DegrowthUK's ongoing series Prospects for Degrowth
Hello Everyone,
I haven’t been keeping up with Substack lately because I’m in the process of making a website (among other things), and I’m kind of overwhelmed by social media. I recently wrote something for DegrowthUK’s series Prospects for Degrowth — which is still open for submissions if anyone is interested in submitting something. The editors are very nice and provided extremely helpful feedback.
An ongoing battle of ideas is shaping the future: Growth or degrowth? Growth has the upper-hand as it’s already entrenched in society, but degrowth is gaining traction. Degrowth will need to be more widely known if it is to be achieved voluntarily and democratically. For me it has to be both.
My article Familiarizing Degrowth: Art and Grounded Communities suggests that a turn to art could help make degrowth more familiar. Artists could spread degrowth ideas by incorporating them into popular film, visual art, and music. Activists can work with local councils to expropriate abandoned buildings and convert them into degrowth cultural centres. These would provide a stable place for degrowth culture to bloom.

Thank you! :)
All the best,
Graham
